Dear Parents and Carers,

I recently read that the most successful people in the world read more than 60 books a year. Although I hesitate to define myself, or anyone else, by that statement there is certainly some truth in it. The skill of reading is a powerful tool. 

Last week, teaching staff welcomed Kaye Lowe into their classrooms and her input into our literacy practice was perfectly timed for the beginning of the year.  

Classroom teachers listen to every student read, every week, and sometimes even more than once. I myself, read with several students when visiting classrooms and delight in their book choices and the strategies they use to decode meaning. I use Kaye's quick tips for helping children when reading which are:

·         read it together,

·         take turns at reading a sentence/paragraph, and,

·         for the beginner reader, use echo reading, which is when the learner repeats       each sentence.
