Celebrating NAIDOC Week
Yesterday, we had the privilege of joining with some of our Western Region schools at McAuley Catholic College, Tumut for their wonderful NAIDOC Week Mass. It was a truly special occasion that highlighted the rich culture, traditions, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We were especially proud of James and Ollie (and their family), who began the day by taking part in a yarning circle and smoking ceremony—two significant cultural practices that promote connection, reflection, and community. Both boys read confidently during the Mass, representing St Mary’s with maturity and pride. A special congratulations to James, who was honoured with a Deadly Encouragement Award for his outstanding effort and contribution to St Mary’s since arriving earlier this year.
Public Speaking
Last Friday, a group of our students travelled to St Joseph’s, Adelong to represent St Mary’s in the local public speaking competition. It was a fantastic day of confident speeches from both Adelong and Batlow students.
All of our participants—Maddie, Landon, Ellie, Kayden, James, Hunter, Phil and Jess—spoke exceptionally well and represented our school with pride. A special congratulations to Jess and Hunter, who won their respective age categories! We also congratulate Phil, Kayden, and Maddie who each placed as Runners Up in their divisions. An awesome achievement!
Thank you to St Joseph’s for being such warm and welcoming hosts, and to McAuley Catholic College Tumut for generously lending us their school bus. We now look forward to the Western Region Competition in Gundagai—best of luck to our talented speakers!
School Community Council - Open Meeting
I’d like to invite all parents to join our next School Community Council meeting on Tuesday, 19th August at 5:30pm. This will be an open meeting, a great opportunity to learn about how our School Community Council operates, the roles involved, and the decisions we make to support our school community.
Whether you’d like to share ideas, contribute to discussions, or simply come along to listen and learn, your presence is most welcome. We look forward to seeing many of you there!
Dates for 2026 Kindergarten Events
We are still accepting enrolments for Kindergarten 2026 and are very pleased with our current intake of students. To ensure every child and family feels welcome and supported, we’re continuing to offer opportunities for next year’s Kindergarten students and their families to connect with our school community. This term, our Year Five students will visit the Apple Tree learning Centre and we will invite these students to our school for some exciting learning opportunities.
Our Parent Information Evening for prospective and newly enrolled 2026 Kindergarten families will be on Monday 18th August at 6pm. If you know of any families who are still considering options for Kindergarten in 2026, please encourage them to get in touch and share the above date. Further information will be communicated via Facebook and next week's newsletter. We look forward to welcoming more families into the St Mary’s community!
Tumut Adelong Times
Our students are doing great things and it is important that they are acknowledged and know how proud our community is of their achievements. If you happen to buy a Tumut Adelong Times tomorrow, you might see some of our kids representing our school at a number of events from this year!
Have a great weekend,
Ryan
